This article analyzes the existing foreign valuation methodologies innovative potential of the region. Further considered domestic experience implementing methodology for assessing the innovation potential of Russian regions (IIRR), developed under the supervision of the Ministry of Economic Development and the Association of Innovative Regions of Russia. Identified weaknesses of this technique, and developed recommendations for improving the methodology for assessing the innovative development of the region in the Russian Federation.
