The article describes statistical basis of tourism monitoring, gives the major terms used in statistical account of tourism indicators in Russia and in the world, as well as definition of tourism activity is proposed. The author reviews the principles of tourism data collection and statistical analysis in accordance with the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) international recommendations for the Tourism Satellite Accounts (TSA) and proposes measures to improve the system of tourism statistical accounting in Russia
